Shakeology Spotlight: Tryptophan (sleep and PMS HELP)

Shakeology Spotlight Ingredient: Tryptophan is one of the standard 20 amino acids, as well as the essential amino acid in the human diet. The body uses tryptophan to help make niacin and serotonin. Serotonin is thought to produce healthy sleep and a stable mood. Tryptophan is an amino acid needed for normal growth in infants and for nitrogen balance in adults. It is an essential amino acid, which means your body cannot produce it — you must get it from your diet.

Tryptophan is Claimed to have several beneficial uses, such as helping with depression, PMS, and teeth grinding. Other tryptophan benefits include helping people to quit smoking and enhancing athletic performance.

Tryptophan is an amino acid, which is important for building proteins.  The body also uses it to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in depression and anxiety.

The Science Behind Shakeology

Spotlight on new Tropical Strawberry Shakeology ingredient: Coconut Flower Nectar!

Spotlight on new Tropical Strawberry Shakeology ingredient: Coconut Flower Nectar! This naturally sweet, nutrient-rich nectar comes from coconut blossoms and contains amino acids, minerals, vitamin C and vitamin B. It’s so sweet that it actually took the place of fructose as a sweetening agent for the new blend! Plus, its low on the glycemic index scale so it produces slow energy release which may help maintain normal blood sugar levels.

The superfood name is a new one describing different foods that meet high concentrations of essential nutrients. An example of a superfood is coconut flower nectar. The flowers of the coco nucifera produce a naturally sweet flavor and holds vitamins C and B and 17 of the 20 amino acids. What exactly does that mean? Well if you’ve ever had a sugar rush and then a crash? That effect is not something that you will get from the coco nucifera.

Even though it is sweet, it releases its energy slowly so that there isn’t a radical crash that can interrupt a day where things need to get done. Not everyone has access to coconut flower nectar so in some parts of the world, it is going to be a real challenge to find food this in your local market.
This superfood is in one shake. The tropical strawberry meal replacement shake has the coconut flower nectar as one of its ingredients listed. There are three flavors in the Shakeology brand. Chocolate and greenberry are the other two but the tropical strawberry is the newest vegan shake available. There are many other good points about the tropical strawberry flavor. This is just one of them.

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Pomegranate Powder!

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Pomegranate Powder! Studies have shown that drinking pomegranate juice regularly has been shown to decrease blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart. This means that it is a great ‘heart health’ supplement and its effective in reducing heart disease risk factors. Drink up!
Pomegranate is used to treat a variety of conditions because it is a rich source of antioxidants and vitamin C, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center or UMMC. Antioxidants can help to protect cells from damage by dangerous chemicals known as free radicals and may also reduce inflammation. But there is little research evidence in humans to prove the benefits of pomegranate juice dried powder and there may be some risks. Talk to your doctor before taking pomegranate.

Heart Disease

Some early research indicates that pomegranate may improve blood flow to the heart but it does not appear to prevent the narrowing of the arteries that can lead to heart attack and other heart problems, according to MedlinePlus. There is conflicting evidence on the benefit of pomegranate for both lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, risk factors that can lead to heart disease. All of these studies have been preliminary, and more thorough research is needed to prove whether pomegranate works to either prevent or treat heart disease, according to UMMC.

Cancer

Early research in animals suggests that pomegranate might slow the growth of tumors, according to UMMC. But too little of this research has been done in humans to judge whether there is a real benefit to pomegranate. A study in men who had been treated for prostate cancer found that those who drank pomegranate juice every day might have delayed the return of the disease. But the finding is preliminary and more research is needed to confirm it.

Arthritis

Pomegranate may block inflammation in the joints that leads to arthritis, according to UMMC. But so far the only studies that suggest this have been done in animals. Without research in humans it is impossible to say whether pomegranate works to treat arthritis or not.

Other Uses

There is some preliminary evidence that pomegranate may be useful to treat gum disease, according to MedlinePlus. But there is not yet enough research to prove a benefit. Pomegranate is also used for a number of other conditions, including intestinal worms, weight loss, diarrhea, dysentery, mouth infections, sore throat and hemorrhoids. There is too little research on these conditions to know whether there is a benefit to pomegranate.

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Acerola powder

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Acerola powder. This antioxidant is derived from cherries and is one of the highest sources of natural, non-synthetic vitamin C

Acerola powder derives from the fruit of the West Indian cherry tree that is native to southern Mexico, Central and South America. The fruit of the cherry tree is dried and the powder is formed from the inside of the seeds and sold as a nutritional supplement in capsule or tablet form by many supplement manufacturers. Acerola powder is purported to be a powerful anti-oxidant that is especially high in ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, and has many health benefits. As a nutritional supplement, acerola is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, therefore, consult your physician prior to use.

Cancer Prevention

The vitamin C and quercetin found in acerola powder may have anti-carcinogenic properties. Carcinogens are compounds that may cause cancer due to their ability to damage the genome or to disrupt cellular metabolic processes. According to the “Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology,” acerola cherry extract may have a protective effect against cancer in the lungs of mice. More studies are needed to determine if there is a link between acerola extract supplementation and cancer prevention.

Skin

Acerola powder has been used in many topical skin treatments and medications, due to its high vitamin C content. Topical vitamin C may help in the formation of collagen, fibrous tissue that makes up healthy skin. Vitamin C also helps promote the growth of skin cells, as well as increasing the healing rate of scars. Acerola powder may also block the production of melanin, which may enhance the appearance of healthy skin.

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Biotin

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Biotin. The primary role of biotin, also known as Vitamin H, is in the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. It plays a special role in enabling the body to use blood sugar (glucose), a major source of energy for body fluids. Biotin promotes normal health of sweat glands, bone marrow, male gonads, blood cells, nerve tissue, skin and hair.

Biotin is necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty acids, and the metabolism of fats and amino acids. It plays a role in the citric acid cycle, which is the process by which biochemical energy is generated during aerobic respiration. Biotin not only assists in various metabolic reactions but also helps to transfercarbon dioxide. Biotin may also be helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level.[3] Biotin is often recommended for strengthening hair and nails.[citation needed] As a consequence, it is found in many cosmetics and health products for the hair and skin, though it cannot be absorbed through the hair or skin itself.[citation needed]

Biotin deficiency is rare because, in general, intestinal bacteria produce biotin in excess of the body’s daily requirements. For that reason, statutory agencies in many countries, for example the USA[4] and Australia,[5] do not prescribe a recommended daily intake of biotin. However, a number of metabolic disorders in which an individual’s metabolism of biotin is abnormal exist.

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Pantothenic Acid (also known as vitamin B5).

Spotlight on Shakeology ingredient: Pantothenic Acid (also known as vitamin B5). This ingredient helps metabolize nutrients, produce vitamin D and stimulate the healing of wounds. Vitamin B5 is critical to the growth of red blood cells as well as sex/ stress-related hormones. This supplement has also gained a lot of press for treating a wide range of skin conditions including acne.

Pantothenic acid is a vitamin, also known as vitamin B5. It is widely found in both plants and animals including meat, vegetables, cereal grains, legumes, eggs, and milk.

Vitamin B5 is commercially available as D-pantothenic acid, as well as dexpanthenol and calcium pantothenate, which are chemicals made in the lab from D-pantothenic acid.

Pantothenic acid is frequently used in combination with other B vitamins in vitamin B complex formulations. Vitamin B complex generally includes vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin/niacinamide), vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), and folic acid. However, some products do not contain all of these ingredients and some may include others, such as biotin, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), choline bitartrate, and inositol.

Pantothenic acid has a long list of uses, although there isn’t enough scientific evidence to determine whether it is effective for most of these uses. People take pantothenic acid for treating dietary deficiencies, acne, alcoholism, allergies, baldness, asthma, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, burning feet syndrome, yeast infections, heart failure, carpal tunnel syndrome, respiratory disorders, celiac disease, colitis, conjunctivitis, convulsions, and cystitis. It is also taken by mouth for dandruff, depression, diabetic nerve pain, enhancing immune function, improving athletic performance, tongue infections, gray hair, headache, hyperactivity, low blood sugar, trouble sleeping (insomnia), irritability, low blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, muscular cramps in the legs associated with pregnancy or alcoholism, neuralgia, and obesity.

Pantothenic acid is also used orally for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, nerve pain, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), enlarged prostate, protection against mental and ph
ysical stress and anxiety, reducing adverse effects of thyroid therapy in congenital hypothyroidism, reducing signs of aging, reducing susceptibility to colds and other infections, retarded growth, shingles, skin disorders, stimulating adrenal glands, chronic fatigue syndrome, salicylate toxicity, streptomycin neurotoxicity, dizziness, and wound healing.

People apply dexpanthenol, which is made from pantothenic acid, to the skin for itching, promoting healing of mild eczemas and other skin conditions, insect stings, bites, poison ivy, diaper rash, and acne. It is also applied topically for preventing and treating skin reactions to radiation therapy.
