What is it?

When it comes to burning off fat, weights have an edge over cardio.
There’s a common misperception that resistance training can’t work your cardiovascular system, but ask anyone who’s ever performed a 20-rep set of squats if his heart rate is elevated. It will be.
Technically speaking, anything that elevates your heart rate is “cardio.” Traditional steady-state cardio (think running a 5K, using the elliptical machine, or doing step aerobics) can be beneficial in terms of fat loss — at least for a while. But your body adapts to any stress placed on it. Over time, the work required to, say, run a 5K will decrease as your fitness improves. Diminishing returns kicks in. What once took 20 minutes to burn X number of calories will take 30 minutes, and then 40 minutes and so on.
With weights, on the other hand, you can stave off this effect by varying your exercises to keep your body guessing. You can change things up by adding resistance, decreasing rest time, increasing the number of reps you do or changing the order of your exercises. All of these things prevent your body from hitting a plateau, boosting your ability to burn fat.
Lifting weights also increases your lean muscle mass, which further increases metabolism at rest. That means you’ll be burning more calories throughout the day

What Jessica S. won:
Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?Before I started I was a sedentary, insecure shell of who I am now. I got married at 21, got pregnant immediately and due to medication, was unable to lose the weight that I’d gained. I suffered from depression and anxiety. I HATED going in to my closet and would just cry after trying on outfit after outfit. WIth a very strict diet I lost a little weight right before I got pregnant with my 2nd daughter, but had a very inactive,junk-food filled pregnancy. After the birth of her, I was a 170lb, 24 yr old. I didn’t want to go out to social functions because no matter what the weather, I was going to have to figure out what body slimmer, or girdle, or sweater I was going to to wear to make my body look “OK”. I got to the point where I thought I was too worthless to exercise. I was so ashamed of myself. I wanted to go out, and be active, and live life like a young woman in her 20’s with two beautiful daughters and an amazing husband should, but was too disgusted to even try.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?What inspired me to begin was a picture taken of me at a family dinner. I didn’t even recognize myself. That was not me. I am fun. I am not tired. I am excited about life, and active. That was NOT who I saw in the picture. My mom saw how upset I was and said, “you have to try this workout. It’s called TurboJam.” She turned on the dvd and I watched this tiny energetic blonde woman, dancing and kickboxing along side other beautiful bodied, energetic women. “Those are all models that signed up for some casting call and got in the dvd.” I said. Then I watched more and the energy was pulling me in. I listened to the testimonials of the REAL WOMEN doing TJ and realized, “they are NOT models. They are MOMS, they are people that are working their butts off to be like they are!” I took the dvd home and worked out to it that night, 4/12/2008. As I punched and kicked and pumped away with a smile on my face, my husband looked at me and said, “this is the thing that’s going to change your life”
Why did you choose the particular program?I chose TurboJam, because of the amazing energy of Chalene Johnson. She is an incredible motivator and so fun to work out with! The women in the dvd’s are REAL. They have weight struggles, they have kids, and they have amazing bodies and outlooks on life. I had NEVER stuck with a workout program or been excited to do a workout day after day. But, TJ changed my life. It changed my attitude. It’s such a fun, dancey, party workout that I couldn’t help but love it and I sweat like I’d never sweat before! TJ also had so many different workouts to choose from. I started out doing just the 20 minute and AbJam for the first month and still lost 10-15 lbs. Then I revved it up with CP3 and the Live workouts and shed even more weight. It is such an amazing program with tons of variety. Over the years, while maintaining my weight I have had great success with Chalean Extreme and am currently killing it with TurboFIre! Talk about sweating! These programs are amazing and I can’t get enough!
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?The results! TurboJam and the other Chalene Johnson programs WORK. I lost 40 lbs doing TurboJam and eating a healthy diet. I’ve kept the weight off for 4 years through TJ, TurboFire and Chalean Extreme. That is stunning to me! I couldn’t have done it without such an amazing program and fantastic motivator. I felt like I was IN the class with those people. I felt like I knew them, and it made me want to class. It made me push harder than I ever thought I could. Tell us about the greatest challenge you faced. How did you overcome that challenge?The greatest challenges I’ve faced all have to do with motherhood. I got pregnant with my 3rd daughter just 5 months after reaching my goal. With my other pregnancies I ate terribly and was completely inactive. Not this time! My third pregnancy was amazing. With my dr’s consent I continued TurboJam and stayed active thanks to the confidence and energy I had gained from the months of training I had just completed. I gained a healthy ammount of weight and was able to burn it off after I gave birth to my daughter. I lost the weight doing TurbJam and TurboFire and have kept it off. Any time you have a family you have to prioritize your fitness. If you don’t MAKE time for it, you will never FIND time for it. I work out every night after my kids go to bed. It’s my time for ME. I am better wife and mother because of it. I constantly set new goals and fire through them, but maintaing and staying in shape once I reached my goal weight was a challenge that I’m SO proud to have conquered.

I went from 168lbs to 127 from April 2008-Sept2008 and have maintained since then. The weight loss was a miracle for me. I had begun to think I was going to be out of shape and unhealthy for the rest of my life. I dropped my dress size from 14-4! It still shocks me and I still have a hard time buying small shirts even after all of this time. I have toned arms and legs and my stomach is better than I could have hoped! Probably my favorite result though, is my change in attitude and who I am. I LOVE FITNESS NOW. I’m not scared of it. I tell others about the Beachbody programs and have inspired MANY of my friends and family to get in shape and try Beachbody workouts. Eat less, exercise more.That’s the simple solution to anyone’s weight loss questions. But if it was that easy, more people would be in great shape. Turns out, some of your other behaviors play a big role in fat loss. Try these 15 tips—including several surprises—to fire up your metabolism speed up your lean body transformation.
1. Have a Plan
The old saying goes: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Have a realistic goal and set specific targets for your week to reach that goal, says Emma-Leigh Synnott, M.B.B.S, an exercise, nutrition, and metabolism specialist. However, make sure that you don’t end up being too strict with yourself. Life is about more than your diet. So be sure to find that balance between reaching your goal, and enjoying the moment too.
2. Sleep More
Sleep does more than help your body recover from a long day — it actually helps you fight fat. In fact, researchers at the University of Chicago reported that sleeping less than 7 to 8 hours can increase your appetite (forcing you to overeat), slow your metabolism (causing you to burn fewer calories) and make the body retain more abdominal fat. Need another reason to sleep more? Lack of shut-eye is also associated with bad workouts. Do yourself a favor and get some rest. Your body will thank you.
3. Eat Less More Often
Eating 5-6 small meals a day will speed up your metabolism and teach you how to eat in portion. Studies have said several things but when you eat smaller meals throughout the day (clean, raw, and healthy), you will rev your metabolism up and it will help you lose weight!
4. Know How Much You Are Eating
Part one of the energy equation is to simply restrict your fuel intake. But unfortunately, most people do very badly with this. Research has shown that most people grossly underestimate how much they are eating, sometimes by up to 50 percent! There are a number of ways you can track what you are eating, such as using MyPlate through livestrong.com or Myfitnesspal,com, but whatever system you use the key is consistency and accuracy.
5. Move More (LOTS more!)
This is, essentially, the second half of the equation – the calories-out side.Unfortunately, most people struggle with this process. In today’s society we are largely sedentary: We travel in cars, we work in front of computers all day and we relax in front of the television. Add incidental exercise (like talking the stairs or tapping your foot) in addition to formal activity (such as playing sports, lifting weights, running, a Beachbody Program) to see the greatest benefits
6. Remove Liquid Calories
You want the truth: 65 percent of Americans drink beverages that are heavy in calories. Not only are these drinks less likely to keep you full, thus leaving you hungry, they are oftentimes loaded with sugar. Yes this means your crystal light, juices, alcohol, pop, sweetened tea, and anything with artificial sweeteners in it!
7. Plan a Cheat Meal
This will help your body see that you are not depriving it from what it is use to and you can splurge, will losing weight!- it is ONE MEAL, not a WHOLE DAY!
8. Make Yourself Accountable
Surround yourself with tools to help you with your journey. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Join my support group or Challenge group! Let people know your goals and ask for their support in helping you achieving them. The more supported you are, the better.
9. Practice Carb Swapping
Carb swapping is is one of the easiest (and fastest) ways to jump-start weight loss. Replace foods like pasta, rice and bread with fruits and vegetables. The fruits and vegetables have fewer calories and carbohydrates than their processed counterparts. That means you can eat more total food without adding weight.
10. Eat More Fat
Did you know that the Institute of Medicine recommends that a diet be made up of 25 to 35 percent fat? Turns out, high-fat foods like nuts, avocados and healthy oils can help you lose fat faster than other diet approaches. Just make sure you figure out how much fat you need in your diet to prevent yourself from overeating. And, as always, avoid the trans fats. They’re still not healthy.
11. Eat More Protein
Protein helps you maintain lean body mass (muscle, not fat), and increase the thermic effect of your diet. That is, protein requires more energy for your body to process than carbohydrates or fat. This can subtly contribute to the calories-out side of the energy equation. As a bonus, eating protein keeps you fuller longer, and researchers have shown that it can reduce how much you eat per day by hundreds of calories.
12. DRINK MORE WATER: Become a Heavy Drinker
No we’re not talking about alcohol. While there’s nothing magical about water, the process of consuming lots of liquid can trick you into feeling less hungry. What’s more, when you’re dehydrated you burn 2 percent fewer calories per day, says University of Utah researchers. So if you struggle to control your appetite, drink up before your meal. Then drink some more. You’ll be more likely to fight off fat. You should be drinking 50% of your weight in ounces!
Your diet should primarily consist of whole-food sources like meats, veggies, fruits and nuts. However, research published in the Journal of Nutrition found those who consume whey-protein shakes lost almost twice as much fat as those who didn’t have the shakes. Magic? Hardly. The protein in shakeology isn’t any more effective than protein found in solid meals. However, most people don’t get enough protein in their diets, and the shakeology is a convenient way to meet your body’s needs.
You didn’t gain weight overnight, so you will not take it off overnight either. Give yourself time and know that the weight will come off if you stick to your plan.
15. COMMIT to a program

Wondering why all your efforts to drop the LBS are just not happening? Here are 6 BIG reasons!
1) You don’t measure EVERY ITEM you will be eating (eyeballing is never good)
2) You don’t drink enough water. (Make it your MINIMUM to get in at least 100oz)
3) You are eating too much fruit! (limit to 1 a day if you need it)
4) You are eating too much Dairy (yeah yeah, “but greek yogurt is GOOD for you, right?” Kill the dairy and you will immediately see changes)
5) Condiment KING! Lay off the “sauce”. Sodium, calories, sugars are typically loaded in these puppies)
6) Skipping meals cause you are not hungry! I know- sounds crazy- but you aren’t hungry! Well, you are eating to fuel your body for optimal function, not for filling the brain with yummy food you want or crave. Eating frequently helps keep the fire burning. Know your daily caloric intake and divide your meals up to at least 5 times a day. So if you are eating 1500 calories a day, make each meal around 300 calories to keep it easier on your brain. =)- Christine Dwyer

In high school, dinner was whatever my mom brought home from Mickey D’s, Wendys, or Burger King. I got plenty of exercise, because I never sat around, so I was relatively thin. In college, I continued my active lifestyle but continued to eat terribly. I consistently stayed at a size 10 or 12. Fast forward to 2003 and I got my first job. I was exhausted when I got home from work. I would sit on the couch, watch tv, and eat an entire box of cereal or crackers for dinner. I had a gym membership but I never went. Once I was home, I was home! I tried it all over the years. Weight watchers, NutriSystem, fad diets, starving myself and guess what – nothing worked. Then I got married and had two babies. My weight had somehow crept the whole way up to 214. At 5’7″, that was just too much. I was at an all time low. My husband even said something to me about it. Talk about embarassing Well, that was the kick in the butt that I needed. I started eating clean, drinking shakeology and working out 6 days a week. In the first month alone, I lost 19 pounds! By the end of the second month of my challenge, I was down 35.9 pounds! When I finished the 90 day challenge, I was down 43 pounds and 5 pant sizes! Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body? *I was always small in high school, that’s what everyone says right? I would look at pictures of the person I use to be and make excuses of why I couldn’t be that girl anymore. I had kids, I was busy, I couldn’t workout like I use to.Well, this was getting me no where and no matter what excuses I made for myself, it didn’t make me like the girl I saw in the mirror anymore then the day before. I felt uncomfortable in every thing I wore, and I hated going shopping. What had happen to the girl that LOVED shopping? What happen to my love for eating good, healthy food? Over the years I slowly had put on weight and was just tired of not feeling good.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey? *Working out and eating healthy has always been something I care about, it just wasn’t always at the top of my priority list.Two years ago my mother passed away at the age of 56, and it was at that moment that I decided to change my life, and my families. I realized I had let myself become someone I didn’t know.I decided NO more excuses, and I owed it to myself and my husband and kids to be around for them. Not only did I want to feel healthy, I wanted to get my confidence back. I didn’t feel good physically which of course was my reason for not working out. My health and my families health became my number one priority! I decided if we felt good, we could enjoy life everyday together with no excuses.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge? *My greatest challenge was just STARTING! I would say ok, this week I’m gonna start. I think it was such a challenge to just start because I was afraid of failing. If I didn’t try I couldn’t fail. I was letting everything else in my life come before my health. Beachbody helped me with staying accountable! I didn’t have to be afraid because I wasn’t the only one who had these struggles. We all have personal struggles in our life and once I saw that other people struggled to, but made it to the other side, my competitive nature kicked in and that was all I needed! Why did you choose this particular program? *I have done several Beachbody workouts over the past two years, but Insanity is what pushed me to the next level in my journey! Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?I started struggling with my weight in my 20’s, and after two pregnancies it spiraled out of control. I was ashamed of how I looked, but too tired to do anything about it. I went back to work full time after the birth of my second son in 2008, and was the heaviest I’ve ever been – at 227 lbs on a 5’7 frame. My youngest son did not sleep well through the night, so I was functioning on only 2-3 hours of sleep while working 45 hours a week. I was exhausted, emotionally and physically. I was depressed and too tired to care, but deep down I did care. A lot. I turned to food to help me cope, and before I knew it I was binging on cookies and cake to help numb the pain.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?I was sitting on my kitchen floor at 2am eating a cupcake, as I had just gotten the baby to sleep again. That was my reward to myself. I ate it in 2 bites, and as I stared at the empty wrapper, I started to cry. What was I doing to myself? My kids deserved a healthy mom. Why would I want to deprive them of that? I couldn’t even chase after my oldest son in the back yard. I knew then that I needed to change, for them and for me.
Why did you choose the particular program?Muscle burns fat! When I heard that phrase from the program, I was intrigued. I was always scared to lift weights, because I didn’t want to bulk up. I liked Chalene’s philosophy, and with sucess from Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire, I knew I couldn’t go wrong.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?The sense of empowerment that I feel every time I lift those weights. I love how Chalene takes the time to teach you the proper form. Form is key and makes all the difference!
Tell us about the greatest challenge you faced. How did you overcome that challenge?I was losing weight and feeling great, then this past February my family received news that would forever change our lives. My 2 year old nephew was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer. I felt that same pain coming back, and the numbness was trying to set in. I didn’t want to exercise or eat right. I kept thinking “why should I? What does it matter?” We went to see him the night he was diagnosed. He was sitting up in bed with the brightest smile, pushing his truck. My heart was breaking and tears were streaming down my face, but he was able to smile and be happy.Given a survival rate of 25%, St. Jude’s accepted him with open arms. He is in his 7 month of treatment there, and after the successful removal of the tumor, all of his scans have come back clear! My nephew is facing a challenge that no one should ever have to face. He helped me gain my perspective & find my inner strength again.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody® program. What achievements are you proud of?At 31 years old, I am in the best shape of my life. Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?From as far back as I can remember, I have been obese. I always saw it as something that just was part of me, but I always hated it. I was lazy – I didn’t really know how or want to put forth any effort to change that. As a kid, my mother would find wrappers from whole packages of lunchmeat or hot dogs under my bed that I had hidden after late night eating. In my early 20’s, my schedule as a Restaurant Manager never allowed me to eat during the day, so when I came home at night I would combine all three meals in to one. If I couldn’t sleep or was bored late at night, I would eat. I always hated myself for my weight, but found myself compensating by always being the first to make a joke about my weight in fear that someone else might. I became comfortable always being the “fat guy” in the family… or anywhere for that matter.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?The first realization that I needed to do something was when I was put on blood pressure medicine at age 25. The doctor also told me that I needed to lose 30lbs in 30 days. I thought that was impossible to do. And after the 30 days, I had not lost anything. I was wearing 56” pants, 5X shirts & had to go to the scrap yard to weigh myself b/c I was over 400lbs. I couldn’t even reach to clip my own toe nails – my wife had to do that for me. I also didn’t think that my wife & I would be able to have kids b/c of my size. My coach is also my insurance agent so when I’d come by his office, he’d encourage me to make a change. He’d been doing Beachbody programs for 3 years. We became friends and he took me to Columbus, OH to a Beachbody meeting & I met Tommy Mygrant and Craig Holiday. They both encouraged me that I could do this and get the results I wanted. I had never really had that support before. I was excited to see if I could do this!
Why did you choose the particular program?I started with Power90 because by now, I had heard & met so many success stories. I remember that first day sitting on my couch looking at the disc, thinking, “I am going to do this today”. So I did and BARELY made it through. But I felt accomplished and called Jeff who said, “Great! Now continue to do it every day for the next thirty days.” So after 30 days I’d lost 45lbs. By the end of 90 days I’d lost over 70lbs. I gradually progressed to P90X which was a whole other world. While I couldn’t do everything or finish the workouts & HAD to modify alot, I thrived on the challenges in P90X – and still do!
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?I loved that in every P90X workout, there were modifications that I could do. Tony’s personality also made the workouts much more enjoyable. I could see results right away, and after finishing 90 days, it was clear that this was a program that actually worked! And it wasn’t just about the workouts; there were so many tools like the fitness guide & meal plans that helped me along the way. I loved Tony’s phrase, “do your best and forget the rest”, and that is now my motto for everything I do.
Tell us about the greatest challenge you faced. How did you overcome that challenge?I would say the greatest challenge was just sticking with the program and not giving up. There were so many days that I just thought, “can I really do this?”. My wife was very supportive, but most of my own family wasn’t, and that added more stress on top of an already challenging situation. Scheduling was a big challenge b/c not only was I working full time 3rd shift, I was also having to take care of my dying mother-in-law. Twelve hour days at the cancer center for treatments took a lot out of me. I overcame it all by sticking with my original decision that I HAD to make a change – period.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody® program. What achievements are you proud of?I HIT THE 200LB WEIGHT LOSS MARK THIS MONTH!!! I am healthy for the first time in my life! Losing 200 lbs in 13 months is not an easy task, but I did it and it has to be one of the most amazing feelings I have ever felt before! I’m off all meds now! I now have definition in my arms that I have never had before. I can do push-ups, pull-ups, and everything I never thought I could before! I’m now doing P90X & INSANITY hybrids. I easily completed the Warrior Dash this month as well – a 5k with 12 obstacles solely from doing Beachbody programs. I now have lots of folks asking ME for fitness advice – imagine that! I’ve constantly got friends from high school who are amazed at my results. Remember when I said that my wife & I could not have a baby due to my weight? This question is a simple one, but has many responses and opinions…. When you are working out you: keep your head up, stay aligned in the feet and hips, tuck the ribs, bend the knees, BREATH. But I have been thinking about this question lately because I am currently unable to workout: “Why do you workout?” is a loaded one. Often, people begin workout routines because they want to lose weight, or they feel guilty for eating a high calorie meal, or they have an upcoming event that they want to lose weight for, or they simply have an ongoing goal to look better. But the benefits of exercise run so much deeper than these reasons.
Working out gives me energy, puts my in a better mood, and makes my body feel fresh! I feel there is a mental connection to being physically active. Through exercise, I have gotten stronger, more confident in my physical capabilities, more serious about my muscle and skeletal health, and I look toward a future of flexibility and strength in my older age. With going to the Chiropractor this has really made me see how working out with proper form makes your whole body work they way it was designed! If your alignment is off, then you are off. I used to agonize over a missed workout, because I thought that taking a day or two off for some rest meant I was lazy. Now I realize that rest is extremely important and valuable to both our physical and mental states. Your relationship with exercise, just like your relationship with food, is an important place to explore your relationship with yourself. Your muscles grow when they are at rest, so TAKE YOUR REST DAYS SERIOUSLY!
I treat working out in like a sports team practicing, because each week I build on my skills and challenge myself a little more. And even if I take a break or don’t do as many reps as my last workout, I push harder the next time until I master it. And that’s what working out means to me: To challenge my body, my mind, and my confidence. It’s all about how YOU make the workout control you… you can CONQUER ANYTHING you PUT YOUR MIND TO! A Healthy you is a HAPPY you!

That is why I am sending this out! I am going to Challenge you 90 days (From March 26th- June 20th) to give me EACH DAY to help you get in shape, healthy, and LOOKING GOOD in that swim suit! A few simple tips to get you prepared:
#1. Drink 8- 8oz cups of water A DAY
#2. Eat 5-6 SMALL meals a day (every 2 1/2-3 hours)
#3. Eat a protein and complex carb at each meal
#4. Only eat 2 servings of fruit a day, berries in the AM and a citrus after your workout!
#5. Drink SHAKEOLOGY EVERYDAY! This will help you fill in the gaps of fruits and veggie nutrients you miss throughout the day, boost your energy, lose/maintain weight and help you feel better overall!

How many of you vacation frequently in the summer or even for Spring Break?!?! I know my family and I go on 2-3 vacations each summer and this year I WILL FINALLY FEEL CONFIDENT IN MY SWIM SUIT!

It’s all about what you are ready to COMMIT to! I have been doing Beachbody for 9 months now and LOVE IT, I have completed P90X, Insanity, and now onto P90X2. Before I started Beachbody I was going to the gym- had a personal trainer, I tried EVERY Diet out there- whether it was a Diet pill, starving myself, or bingeing. NOTHING WORKED FOR ME! I got to the point I was disgusted with my body, It was 18 months after I had my son, second child, and I was FED UP! I got so depressed that is was interfering with my marriage, my family, and me being a good mother! I knew I needed CHANGE! So, My coach Kati had talked to me previously and I finally said I AM IN! Within the First Month we started a Summer Slim Down Challenge which helped me stay accountable and on track, if I needed help with nutrition they were there! I have never thought there would be as much SUPPORT from a group of strangers than THIS TEAM! The motivation is INSANE!!! This is where my Journey started and I want to Pay it Forward and Help those out there that need help staying accountable, getting motivated, and having the support. YOU are WORTH IT! It is YOUR Life and YOU DESERVE THE BEST!!!
